Fly reels are primarily considered storage spools for small fish on a fly rod. They are rarely needed to land a fish because the fish does not have enough strength to overpower the rod or the fisherman. The line on a smaller fish is sometimes brought in with the line hand and allowed to lie at the feet until the fish is brought to net. As the fish become larger and the advantage goes to the fish upon hooking the quarry, the line is immediately reeled back onto the spool which is called putting the fish
